Mariana Valente is a dedicated and resilient mature student currently completing her fourth year in the Specialized Honours Program in Psychology. Embarking on her second degree, she is deeply passionate about understanding human behavior and the psychological factors that shape development. With a strong interest in Clinical Developmental Psychology, she aspires to support children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, recognizing the profound impact of early life experiences on mental health.
Her academic journey has been enriched by hands-on research experiences. As a research assistant of the Teen Relationship Lab, she contributed to the development of a risk assessment tool for youth at risk of sex trafficking, which later became the foundation of her Honours thesis. Mariana has also contributed to two manuscripts examining nonverbal behavior through an attachment lens as a research coordinator at the Emotion Transformation Institute. She is currently conducting an independent research project on systemic therapies, specifically in early childhood at the Prime Lab. These experiences have strengthened her research skills and commitment to advancing evidence-based interventions for vulnerable children and families.
Beyond academia, Mariana has worked extensively with children as an Early Childhood Educator and as the co-founder of BASE, a nonprofit supporting youth resilience. As an immigrant fluent in multiple languages, she values cultural inclusivity and equitable access to psychological support. She is eager to continue her studies in the Clinical Developmental Psychology Graduate Program, where she hopes to contribute to research on trauma, attachment, and therapy effectiveness, ultimately improving interventions for children and families in need.
