Trainee Clinical Psychologist (final year)
NHS England and University of Essex , United Kingdom
My name is Rebecca Shashoua. I am a final year trainee clinical psychologst with the University of Essex, England.
I hold an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Hertfordshire, UK (2015-18) and a masters in Health Psychology from the University of Bath, UK (2018-19).
Before starting the clinical psychology doctorate, I began as a healthcare assistant in an inpatient CAMHS service, supporting children and adolescents diagnosed with anorexia. Later, as an assistant psychologist, I helped establish and run a new mental health pathway for women in the criminal justice system and I provided therapy as part of their sentencing. The main presenting difficulty among women in this role was complex-PTSD.
During my clinical training, I have worked across various adult and older adult services where I have gained experience in assessing and treating complex-PTSD using evidence-based protocols such as the re-living therapy protocol, conducting assessment and treatment in a hospital-based mental health liaison service using mainly ACT and CBT models, and in a community learning disability service where I am currently based. My current role includes an array of work beyond therapy including neuropsychological testing, dementia assessments, systemic interventions and family therapy, and teaching and training staff on the use trauma-informed practices.
My specialist clinical interest is in trauma and my research interests are in qualitative studies, both of which informed the topic for my thesis on the doctorate. The research focusses on the lived experiences of people with depersonalisation-derealisation disorder and aims to enhance understanding of this under-researched condition.
