Dr. Benjamin Israel is honored to participate in the ISSTD’s preconference education series. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, where he works in consultation-liaison psychiatry and addictions psychiatry across various clinical sites. As Medical Director of the Trauma-Informed Care Clinic within the Division of Addictions Research and Treatment, Dr. Israel leads efforts to integrate trauma-responsive approaches into outpatient addictions care in a low-theshold community-facing clinical setting.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Israel is an active researcher and educator. He is a co-primary investigator on a funded study examining the systematic implementation of trauma-informed practices in an urban addiction clinic. His recent publications explore trauma-responsive approaches to addiction treatment, leadership, and public health, emphasizing the intersection of trauma and substance use disorders. He supervises psychiatric and psychotherapy trainees at all levels, providing specialized training in the evaluation and management of complex posttraumatic and dissociative disorders
Dr. Israel plays a leadership role in ISSTD, where he co-leads a Task Force focused on improving training for psychiatrists in treating complex trauma and dissociative disorders. He is also a member of ISSTD's Board of Directors and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation.
Previously, Dr. Israel was Service Chief at Sheppard Pratt’s Trauma Disorders Program, overseeing a multidisciplinary team treating highly complex cases of trauma and dissociation. He continues to see long-term psychotherapy patients in private practice. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with his wife and their two sons.
