Celeste Chavez is a Captain in the United States Army and Certified Nurse Midwife. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of Colorado in 2012 and her Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 2016. She is currently a second year PhD student at Johns Hopkins University.
Prior to returning to school to pursue a PhD in Nursing Science she was a full scope midwife and supported hundreds of families and individuals. She was stationed at Tripler Army Medical Center from 2016-2020 and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany from 2020-2023. She was motivated in large part by her experience as a midwife and stories of her patients to explore healing in the context of sexual assault. Her dissertation work is focused on reporting decisions following military sexual assault. Her research draws on the work of reproductive justice advocates to create space for individuals and communities to heal. She is interested in policy development, resource management, and implementation science. She would like to continue work in reproductive health, ensuring options and access for service members within and outside of the military healthcare system.
She is a part of the gender-based violence research team at Johns Hopkins. She is a research assistant to multiple projects; exploring meaning of community in group prenatal care, effectiveness of group education for the prevention of female genital cutting in Mali, access to care and experiences of veterans with chronic pain, and female readiness and healthcare utilization.
