Jennifer White VanBoxel, Ph.D., LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, educator, and researcher dedicated to advancing systemic therapy for complex trauma and relational distress. As Core Faculty in the Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy (MSMFT) Program at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, she integrates clinical expertise, research, and teaching to shape the next generation of therapists.
Dr. White VanBoxel is the founder and director of the Complex Trauma and Systemic Intervention (CTSI) Lab, where she mentors graduate students and conducts research on systemic interventions for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) and relational trauma. Her work explores the intersections of trauma, attachment, and relational health, focusing on developing emotionally focused and trauma-informed interventions for couples and families. She is currently authoring a clinical handbook on treating couples in the context of C-PTSD.
In addition to her research, Dr. White VanBoxel is an active leader in the field, serving as Chair-Elect of the Couple and Intimate Relationship Network within the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She presents nationally on topics related to relational trauma, intersectionality, and systemic therapy approaches.
In the therapy room, she specializes in trauma recovery, identity development, and relational dynamics. She is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Prepare/Enrich Premarital Therapy. She provides therapy through The Family Institute in Chicago and Evanston, offering in-person and teletherapy sessions.
Through her work as a clinician, educator, and researcher, Dr. White VanBoxel is committed to fostering meaningful connections and advancing systemic approaches to healing.
