Dr. Joanne (Jo) Cohen Ph.D., LMFT, NCC (Jo/she/her) is a Professor of Counseling and coordinator of Kutztown University’s M.A. program in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling. Dr. Cohen holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia. Dr. Cohen has completed two year-long sabbaticals in trauma therapy, first at the Children’s Alliance Center of Berks County from 2005-2006, and then at a non-profit refugee service organization from 2021-2022. She has extensive training in trauma counseling using prolonged exposure, in family therapy, in client-centered therapy and the person-centered approach. Cohen is a PA licensed Psychologist, a PA licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a National Certified Counselor. Dr. Cohen has held a range of editorial positions on the Person-Centered Journal, including editor-in-chief. She has chaired multiple conferences on the person-centered approach. In 2011, she received the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach distinguished service award. From 2016-2020, Cohen served as a volunteer ombudsperson for the Lehigh County office of aging, separately conducting a line of research on elder abuse and presenting and publishing on the topic of elder abuse. In 2019, she received the Association for Adult Development and Aging distinguished service award. Dr. Cohen has received $40,000 in research and professional development grants. Current research lines focus on mental health professionals working within under-resourced communities and therapeutic use of drawings to facilitate child and adolescent client disclosure of trauma and abuse. Dr. Cohen has published over 20 articles and book chapters and delivered nearly 100 presentations at state, regional, national, and international conferences.
