Michelle Park graduated summa cum laude from York University in 2022, obtaining a B.A. (Spec. Hons.) in Psychology. She completed her thesis under the supervision of Dr. Henny Westra, examining the potential for thin slices of (i.e., short video clips) of client resistance rated by untrained observers to predict therapy outcome expectations. Her thesis highlights the promise of thin slices for capturing client resistance and training therapists to spot resistance in real time during therapy sessions.
Michelle has participated in conferences including the 2023 Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Conference. Her research has been presented at the International Health Conference for Undergraduate Health Research (CUHR), and Annual Ontario Psychology Undergraduate Thesis Conference (AOPUTC). Currently, she is a Research Associate at the Emotion Transformation Institute, affiliated with the Family Psychology Centre in Toronto, Ontario, and is preparing manuscripts for publication. Michelle is also a Research Assistant in two research labs at York University; Principal Investigators Dr. Robert Muller (Trauma and Attachment Lab) and Dr. Gary Turner (Cognitive Aging Neuroscience & Neurointervention (CANN)).
Michelle is keen to continue refining her research skills while exploring her interests in therapy process and outcomes, trauma, coping, emotion regulation, suicide, and nonverbal and paralinguistic behaviour. Her clinical work includes supporting individuals in crisis at the Kids Help Phone Crisis Text Line and Distress Centres of Greater Toronto. Michelle’s career goal is to research and work as a registered Clinical Psychologist to provide psychotherapy and conduct clinical research to inform interventions to improve mental health outcomes for adults and youth.
