Michaela B. Swee, PhD, ABPP is a board certified clinical psychologist and the Director of Training and Education in McLean Hospital’s Trauma Continuum (MTC), where she coordinates an interdisciplinary training program. Dr. Swee serves as a clinician in the MTC, where she runs trauma-focused therapy groups and delivers individual therapy. Dr. Swee is a clinical investigator in McLean’s Dissociative Disorders and Trauma Research Program and faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Swee additionally runs a private practice in Massachusetts.
Dr. Swee received her PhD in clinical Psychology from Temple University and completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Swee is an expert in the research and treatment of fear-related disorders, including trauma- and anxiety-related disorders. She is trained in traditional and third wave cognitive-behavioral therapies, as well as relational and humanistic approaches. Dr. Swee specializes in the transdiagnostic treatment of shame and self-criticism using acceptance-, mindfulness-, and compassion-focused approaches. Dr. Swee is internationally recognized for her clinical work and research in Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT).
Dr. Swee is passionate about the dissemination of CFT to the global population. She is the founder of Compassion Collective, a podcast for professionals and laypeople geared toward helping people foster greater self-compassion in their lives. Dr. Swee has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters related to the nature and treatment of anxiety related disorders and Compassion-Focused Therapy. She is the recipient of several awards, including the 2022 Adam Corneel Young Investigator Award and the 2023 McLean Hospital Presidential Award.
