Robert T. Muller, Ph.D., C.Psych. completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard in 1994, after which he joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, and later, York University in Toronto. His scholarship is in the area of intra-familial and interpersonal trauma: psychopathology, treatment efficacy, and strategies for intervention. His most recent book on trauma treatment is entitled: Trauma & the Struggle to Open Up: From Avoidance to Recovery & Growth. It won the 2019 Written Media Award for the previous year’s best work on trauma, given by the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD). And his 2010 book on trauma treatment is entitled: Trauma & the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing, which also won the ISSTD Written Media Award (2011). Both of his books have been widely translated and are considered psychotherapy bestsellers. He is a Fellow of ISSTD for his scholarship in the field and was honored by ISSTD as the 2024 recipient of the Pierre Janet Award for his work in applying trauma theory to the question of witness credibility. He is a full professor and supervising psychologist at York University, where he is the 2012 winner of the President's University-Wide Teaching Award (senior faculty category), and where he has served as principal investigator of several multi-site programs for the treatment of intra-familial trauma. Dr. Muller founded and edits an academic blog, The Trauma & Mental Health Report, an online magazine that disseminates knowledge on trauma and mental health to the community at large.
