John O'Neil, MD, FRCPC, is a psychiatrist in private practice in Montréal, Québec. He is also a member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society. He has a BA in Philosophy (1971, Loyola of Montréal), an MD (1978, McGill U.), and FRCPC in psychiatry (1982). He was assistant professor of psychiatry, McGill, for 1982-2018; staff psychiatrist at Douglas Hospital (1982-1998) and St Mary’s Hospital (1998-2018). He is also trained in clinical hypnosis and EMDR.
Dr O'Neil co-edited, with Paul Dell, Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders (Routledge, 2009), and co-edited, with Martin Dorahy, PhD, and Steven Gold, PhD, the 2nd edition of the book (Routledge, 2023), in which he also authored 2 chapters: Dissociative Multiplicity and Psychoanalysis and Dissociation in the ICDs and DSMs.
Dr O’Neil co-edited, with Emanuela Mundo (Milan, Italy), a major chapter of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual – 2nd edition (2017), co-edited by Vittorio Lingiardi (Rome) and Nancy McWilliams (New Jersey), and co-authored, with Annabelle Gagné and Melissa Martin, a chapter, Gérer les états dissociatifs liés au TSPT, of the book Les troubles liés aux événements traumatiques (2019, Presses de l'Université Laval).
Since the early 1990s, Dr O’Neil has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of dissociative disorders and other complex post-traumatic disorders, working in both English and French. He presented frequently at the ISSTD Annual Conferences and teaches in its Professional Training Program. He is a Fellow of the ISSTD, which has granted him a number of awards, including its Pierre Janet Writing Award and its Lifetime Achievement Award.
