Dr. Butcher is a full-time faculty in the MA Counseling Program at Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, PA. She also holds a position as an art therapist at Cobys Family Services working with clients with foster care and adoption backgrounds. While working as a substitute teacher after graduating with her undergraduate degree in Art Education in 2003 from Roberts Wesleyan University, she was introduced to using the arts with students with disabilities and the profession of art therapy.
After graduating with her Master’s degree in Creative Arts Therapy, Art Therapy from Nazareth College in 2008, she worked in different milieus over the years. Initially working in schools K-12 providing art therapy to a variety of children with emotional, social, and other mental health and Autism Spectrum Disorders and other neurodevelopmental disorders. She was a LEND fellow from 2012-2013, which enhanced her skills in understanding and working with children with neurodevelopmental and other related disorders.
She has held parallel careers in higher education in administrative positions and as an art therapist. During this time, she realized a passion for working with students. Seeing their growth and development throughout their education fueled her passion to teach in higher education. And in August 2020, she was awarded a Doctorate in Education in Counseling from the University of Rochester. Her dissertation evaluated an original art therapy intervention with adults with ASD to teach idioms. Findings showed the benefits of pairing drawings with learning of idiomatic phrases.
She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in PA (LPC), a Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), and a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in NYS (LCAT). Dr. Butcher is an active member of the American Counselor Association and American Art Therapy Association.
