Nicholas A. Pierorazio (he/they) is a PhD student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned his BA in Psychology and Foreign Languages (Spanish concentration) from Towson University in 2021. Since then, he worked as a Research Assistant in the Treatment of Patients with Dissociative Disorders (TOP DD) lab directed by Dr. Bethany Brand, gaining years of research experience related to trauma, dissociation, and their treatment before beginning his PhD.
He has published several research articles and book chapters with three main foci: (1) experiences of psychological trauma and its sequelae, (2) assessment and treatment of psychological trauma and dissociation, and (3) psychotherapy process and outcome. He primarily uses qualitative methods and mixed-methods approaches to investigate these areas, particularly emphasizing critical and constructivist lenses to understand them. As a student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, he works under the mentorship of Dr. Heidi Levitt. His master’s thesis project is in progress and is a qualitative meta-analysis investigating client experiences of psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.
Clinically, he worked as a mental health worker at Sheppard Pratt Health System’s Trauma Disorders Unit between 2020 and 2022. He is presently a psychotherapy trainee at University of Massachusetts Boston’s Counseling Center where he practices individual psychotherapy and leads an LGBTQ+ support group for a diverse body of undergraduate students. He is a current member of ISSTD and maintains memberships within other professional organizations like the American Psychological Association and International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
