Laura Hawkins is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the school of Nursing at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. She teaches psychiatric nursing at the undergraduate level. She also teaches the diagnosis and medical management of mental illnesses and also psychotherapy skills in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner programs at the graduate level. Laura owned a private practice for two decades including psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management for children and adults. She treated a broad range of concerns with particular interest in trauma recovery and attachment. Her education includes MS in Mental Health Counseling from Purdue University in 2003 and MSN from Indiana University in 2004 majoring in Child/Adolescent Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. She received a Post-Masters Certificate as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Indiana University in 2012. She obtained a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Purdue Global University in 2020. She holds board certifications as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and National Certified Counselor. Laura has additional training in EMDR, somatic psychotherapy and Theraplay. She created the educational video series, Voices of Complex Trauma, to increase understanding of the complex trauma experience which is suitable for graduate and undergraduate health education. She is passionate about improving resources and therapeutic options for those with dissociative disorders. She desires to amplify their voices to increase understanding and reduce the stigma of dissociative disorders. Laura is the primary investigator for the Finding Solid Ground Groups study through Purdue University. She is a member of ISSTD and has received an Advanced Certificate in Complex Trauma and Dissociation.
