Abstract Shocks No More! Is a clinically- based model I accidentally discovered years ago when I was treating a DBT client who also had DID. Client X was VERY upset perceiving that I was blaming X for current problems. The clinical tension we had spent weeks negotiating, immediately melted away when I utilized these concepts, in this way.
Almost 20 years later a 40-page booklet of my Shocks No More! model is fun, short, easy to read and minimally triggering. Clients gain individualized reinforcement in sessions and have a reference. I yearned to help other providers work with this population successfully. Feedback suggests the Shocks No More model has helped even internationally!
Shocks No More! presents a paradigm shift for both providers and clients. Developmentally traumatized clients NEVER knew healthy so talk of “getting back to healthy” is like a foreign language to them.
Clients were not in control of being abused (or even being forced to abuse others). Being literally trapped in highly unpredictable circumstances, led to (dysfunctional) behaviors trying to get basic human needs met.
Watching repetitive dysfunction play out is frustrating for providers, but more so for clients. It isn’t self-sabotage or resistance.
This groundbreaking paradigm directly utilizes the principles of learned helplessness. Healing acknowledges inevitably shocks will come to everyone.
Providers proactively help clients identify their patterns and easily avoid perceptions of blame. Clients are in control of whether they decide to live in or out of their box. Efficacy comes from managing shocks, without shattering. Celebrate with clients using healthy tools to jump out of their box, literally the scariest thing they will ever do. Clients feeling motivated and empowered to design their world. These are just some of the critical skills traumatized clients can learn in this Shocks No More model.
