Single-center Study: the Impact of a Level III Trauma Center's first 36months running after establish on the Outcomes of Transportation Accident Patients in Northeast China
Abstract Background According to the National Bureau of Statistics, transportation accidents in Jilin Province zooms sharply in the recent 5 years. In 2020, the death number increased to 1,097, while the injuries increased to 10,503. As a comprehensive university hospital, we officially established a Level III Trauma centre in July 2020. This study aims to analysis data of first and second 18 months of the trauma centre running to find whether is more effective on the medical care for transportation accident injuries.
Methodology A total of 669 patients, during July 2020 to June 2023, were extracted from the electronic medical record. Data of demographic conditions, injury types, in-hospital medical care, and discharge status of transportation accident injuries admitted in our hospital were compared. The four groups were divided based on time, TC1(n=247) are the trauma centre admissions, while Control 1(n=124) are the admissions from other departments of the first 18 running months;TC2 (n=205), Control 2(n=93) are from the second 18months of the centre running.
Result TC groups indicate a better discharge status (P<0.05): the improved rates are higher in TC1 (92.31%) and TC2(93.17%), while Control 1 was 74.19% and Control 2 was 66.07%; and mortality are lower in the two TC groups as well compare with the two Control groups respectively(TC1=3.24%, Control 1=11.29%, TC2=3.41%, Control 2=19.35%). However, there is longer LOS and higher medical expenses of the two TC groups in the pairs respectively (P<0.05).
Conclusion Though the hospitalization cost is higher than other departments, the trauma center indeed leads to a more positive trend of patient discharge outcomes of transportation accident injuries.
